Our Story

The Bakery at Number 4 was established by professionally trained pastry chef Marianne Woodend and Melissa Spencer.

We are becoming a locally recognised bakery specialising in making beautiful bespoke wedding cakes, celebration cakes, afternoon teas and dessert tables.

Having gained catering qualifications at Kendal College, Marianne went on to work under Simon Rogan at L’enclume specialising in pastry. Marianne continued to work in professional kitchens gaining twelve years’ experience in restaurants from The Drunken Duck, Ambleside to The Punchbowl, Crosthwaite. Upon completing a science degree Melissa ventured in to the hospitality industry working front of house which led to working in high end retail providing bespoke services for customers.

The Bakery became the perfect option for Marianne and Melissa to combine their experience and create a business offering the customer a bespoke professional service.

With four children under the age of four it was important that the bakery became a business that offered the highest of standards with a warm family feel.
